NEW DELHI: Justice Indu Malhotra, the first woman attorney to be directly appointed to the Supreme Court, last sat on the bench as a judge on Friday, but was unable to finish her speech by thanking and by the attorney members Emotions being overwhelmed that were almost overwhelmed brought tears to her eyes.

Vikas Singh, president of the SC Bar Association, said there was no reason India should not raise the retirement age for SC judges to 70. “Although Justice Malhotra is irreplaceable, I urge the CJI to take steps to fill the vacancy created by her retirement with another judge,” he said.
CJI Bobde said Justice Malhotra had been meticulous as an attorney and she brought those traits to the bank and always handled cases thoroughly. With her retirement, the SC has only one judge in Justice Indira Banerjee. Indu Malhotra was appointed judge on April 27, 2018 and retired on March 13, 2021 after serving less than three years in office. This is one of the shortest of the eight female judges appointed to the SC since 1950.
