CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Prime Minister MK Stalin tabled an anti-CAA resolution in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Wednesday calling on the central government to repeal the law.
Stalin said in the gathering: “This August House believes that the 2019 Citizenship (Amendment) Act, passed by Parliament in 2019, is inconsistent with the secular principles set out in our Constitution, nor is it conducive to community harmony is.” that is the rule in India. ”
“In order to protect and ensure the unity and communal harmony in this country and to uphold the secular principles enshrined in the Indian constitution, this August House decides to call on the Union government to repeal the Citizenship Act (Amendment) 2019,” he added.
The CAA allows persecuted minorities of the Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to obtain Indian citizenship.
The opposition parties and several groups protested against the implementation of the CAA. The CAA’s critics believe that the law, in conjunction with the National Register of Citizens (NRC), is intended to target the minorities in India.
